Artist : Do Ho Suh

Do Ho suh(1962~ ) is one of renowned artists in South Korea and became famous particularly after showing his huge fabric installation,'Home within Home within Home within Home within Home.' He graduated and received a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. And he even got a MFA in sculpture from the Yale University.

But the reason why I chose his work is not on his splendid background. I saw this huge scale of contemporary artwork as a real. When I first saw this artwork, I was overwhelmed by its huge scale and got a second surprise by its details. As it was made of fabrics, it was very delicate but looked firm and sophisticated. I was impressed by his work even more when I heard the story of why he made this installation. In his early days, he had a frequent change of environment and he had no choice but to face those different atmosphere and new space. Especially when he moved from a Korean traditional house to a house in Los Angeles, he felt uncomfortable and unfamiliar sensation. Then he started to work on his artwork in the concept of 'trans-cultural displacement.' And I understood and actually felt his purpose and feeling for making this installation as I also moved into different cities and towns when I was only in the elementary school. After having a frequent move in and out houses in Korea, I spent my high school in Malaysia and now I am in Chicago. So I truly could get his idea for his work. He even spent 10 years to finish this project.

There are many reasons why I like this huge scale artwork but the main reason why I like this is because of his motivation and intention working on this for 10 years.
